On evaluating social welfare by sequential generalized Lorenz dominance
نویسنده
چکیده
The sequential generalized Lorenz (SGL) ordering is introduced by Atkinson and Bourguignon (1987) to rank heterogeneous income distributions. It is well-known that this ordering has a strong utilitarian support. In this note, we show that one does not have to be a utilitarian to accept this welfare ordering: the SGL ordering is supported by all increasing SWFs which record an increase in overall welfare when a (cardinal) welfare transfer is made from less needy to needier. 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. Ranking intersecting Lorenz curves
Ranking Intersecting Lorenz Curves This paper is concerned with the problem of ranking Lorenz curves in situations where the Lorenz curves intersect and no unambiguous ranking can be attained without introducing weaker ranking criteria than first-degree Lorenz dominance. To deal with such situations two alternative sequences of nested dominance criteria between Lorenz curves are introduced. At ...
متن کاملA Bounded Index Test to Make Robust Heterogeneous Welfare Comparisons
Fleurbaey, Hagneré and Trannoy (2003) develop a bounded dominance test to make robust welfare comparisons, which is intermediate between Ebert’s (1999) cardinal dominance criterion –generalized Lorenz dominance applied to household incomes, divided and weighted by an equivalence scale– and Bourguignon’s (1989) ordinal dominance criterion. In this paper, we develop a more complete, but less robu...
متن کاملStatistical Inference for Generalized Lorenz Dominance Based on Grouped Data: a Reconsideration
One income distribution is preferable to another under any increasing and Schur-concave (S-concave) social welfare function if and only if the generalized Lorenz (GL) curve of the first distribution lies above that of the second (GL dominance). This paper (i) derives the asymptotic distribution of a vector of sample GL curve ordinates, interpreting it as a method-of-moments estimator, and (ii) ...
متن کاملOn the reconciliation of efficiency and inequality aversion with heterogeneous populations: characterization results∗
We characterize a family of r-extended generalized Lorenz dominance quasi-orderings and a family of r-Gini welfare orderings, on the basis of two allegedly “incompatible” axioms for heterogeneous welfare comparisons (Ebert, 1997, Ebert and Moyes, 2003, Shorrocks, 1995), but at the cost of either completeness or separability. JEL classification: D31, D63, I31.
متن کاملLorenz Dominance and Non-welfaristic Redistribution
Given the decision to implement a non-welfaristic redistribution scheme, we analyze which mechanisms are favored by traditional Lorenz dominance and poverty dominance adherents. We show that for large classes of income functions Lorenz dominance results can be found in the comparison of two egalitarian equivalent mechanisms. Comparisons of different conditionally egalitarian mechanisms only yie...
